love-a-bull

We'd like to share with you some stories of happy endings!  Below are photos of some happy pit bulls adopted from Dakin with stories told by the people who love them.  Enjoy!

toby

My best buddy Toby, is an avid outdoor pup.  We mountain bike, build and maintain trails, and attend biking events throughout New England together.  Today he’s resting after 6 straight days of riding and working in the woods with me.

gidget

I've wanted to write you just about this wonderful animal all week. We have experienced a lot of devastation. Irene tore thru our house and left 4 ft of silt. This is my second time with flood repair but Gidget's first. Just to let you know how much she has changed she has adapted far better than we could imagine. Every imaginable person has passed thru this house unexpectedly and this silly girl greats them with a big grin and a wagging tale. Of course Freddie, our cattle dog has helped but the training sessions for Gidget to get her Good Citizens Certificate was the best idea.

She had an identity crisis thinking she was a Lab because every dog in the class was a Lab Mix but she now looks at herself as pretty wonderful. She climbs in total strangers laps and acts as a buffer for all the loss we have experienced and she thinks that is pretty special. She has found her place. I am trying to listen better to her bodily reactions to weather and earthquakes because if I train myself to listen to her sensitivities I will be better prepared.

I've learned a lot about touch and restraint and thank God she has made such a great listening partner. Here is a picture of her the day of the earthquake. For some reason she made this fort outside in the flowers. Too bad she couldn't talk. That whole week she kept trying to tell us the animals were heading to high ground and we of course, being stupid humans didn't listen and then the flood came. We all are still traumatized but we hang in there as a whole family. The difference for Gidget to be a part of that family has made all the difference in the world to her. Someday we will come to visit.

rocket

Rocket, a pit bull mix, came to us as a foster on October 5th, 2010. Rocket fit into our family of two adults, three dogs and two cats seamlessly.  She enjoyed our afternoon hikes, romping with our other dogs, and she warmed up to Luke and I immediately, snuggling with us on the couch, in bed, or anywhere she could crawl into our laps.  Rocket began sleeping on my growing stomach every night.  As our baby grew, Rocket continued to rest her head on my womb, head bouncing every time the baby moved.  We had no intention of adding friend to our family but we found ourselves sick to our stomachs when folks inquired about the sweet little pittie who trotted alongside us on our walks.  How could we possibly give her up?

The answer came to us after our daughter, Ulla was born.  Wherever we went with the baby, Rocket followed.  She was very interested in Ulla and was never far from her.  There was no way we could possibly separate them.

This still holds true.  Eight months later, Ulla pets her dogs- especially Rocket.  Rocket takes care of her baby, and always comes upstairs with us in the evening to be sure that Ulla is tucked safely into her crib.  She truly lives up to the nickname "nanny dog" that was given to pit bulls a long time ago.  She is simply the sweetest.

Rocket garners a great deal of attention when we are out and about- both for her adorable looks and sweet, gentle disposition.  Whenever anyone asks us what breed she is, we are proud to answer with a smile, "pit bull." She is a glowing example of what a pit bull is truly like, and we feel quite lucky to be sharing our lives with her.

simon

We adopted our pit bill mix three months ago and he had been an amazing addition to our family. Simon (previous name was Saint) is a brindle pit bull lab mix. Only 9 months old and he is a joy every day. I have attached some photos to show off his great personality. He is great with other dogs, loves making new friends, car rides, and is incredibly affectionate. He enjoys hiking with us frequency, loves playing in the water and he's great with children. Our family feels complete with Simon in our home. At the end of the day he's a great snuggle buddy. We are so thankful for what you do each day giving these animals the chance to find forever homes. Pit bulls are wonderful animals and in a couple of years I know we will be back to find Simon a new brother or sister pit! Thanks for all you do. Feel free to share these as you see fit.

rocky

I adopted Rocky just about a year ago.  He is some sort of Pit Bull mix, although no one is sure what he is mixed with if anything.  He has been a great dog, and really is my best friend.  He is always at home waiting for me when I get home and has a huge "bully" smile on when he sees me.  I never have to worry about letting him off his leash while out for walks because he will not go anywhere where he can’t see me.  He loves to ride around with me, and one of his favorite past times is sticking his head out the window while riding.  He also loves to tug with anything he can find (like most bully breeds).

Rocky is also very smart.   He completed both Level I and II obedience classes at Dakin.  He picks things up very fast.  He also picks ups certain words very quick, such as "ride, walk, Daves (pet store), Daisy (my parents dog)."  When you say these words he goes nuts and gets really excited.

It is unfortunate that these breeds get such a bad name.  It is all about how they are brought up, and with proper training and love they will be the best dog anyone can ask for.  Rocky is the perfect example of this.  Thank you Dakin for doing this promotion and I hope it helps all these dogs find their forever homes.
