dakin receives $199,400 grant from petsmart charities® to spay/neuter pet cats

Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society has received a $199,400 two-year grant from Petsmart Charities® to be used by the Dakin Community Spay/Neuter Clinic.  This grant will provide free sterilization for pet cats of low income residents living in the following communities or zip codes:

Across the Pioneer Valley, more than three-quarters of animals entering area animal shelters are cats.  In 2010, of the nearly 6,000 homeless animals served by Dakin, more than 4,000 were cats.  Cats and kittens are relinquished at an alarming – and lethal – rate.  “As part of Dakin’s Three Year Plan to guarantee a home for every adoptable animal or any animal capable of being rehabilitated and made adoptable, we must reduce the number of litters born to cats”, said Leslie Harris, Executive Director of Dakin.  “This generous grant will help us assist those community members who want to neuter their animal but have no financial means to do so.

Participants will need to schedule an appointment by calling 413-781-4019 and will need to provide proof of residency at the time of surgery.  Assistance with transportation is available.  People who live in other towns/zips codes but need help are encouraged to call the clinic to discuss other program options.
