dakin spay/neuter clinic celebrates number 32,000!
This week we celebrated our 32,000th patient at the Dakin Community Spay/Neuter Clinic!
This is Nopi feeling very relaxed waking up after his neuter surgery. He’s a two year old Pomeranian/Chihuahua mix. His neuter was made possible by Dakin’s very cool Moms Fixed Free program which helps people in our community that may not be able to afford the cost of surgery but don’t want their pet to continue having babies. To qualify for this program, the person brings the puppies or kittens to the adoption center to place for adoption and the clinic offers the surgery for mom at no cost.
You may have noticed that I said Nopi is waking up from HIS neuter surgery and thought, “Hey wait a minute… He’s not a mom! How did he qualify for this program?” This special situation is one in which the mom dog is 10 years old, which is EXTREMELY old to still be having puppies. In addition, mom has some health issues that might prevent her from safely having surgery. We are still waiting until she has recovered from her most recent litter to determine if she can safely have spay surgery. In the meantime, we don’t want to risk her getting pregnant again. We considered our options in this special circumstance and decided to extend the Moms Fixed Free program to cover Nopi. Once neutered, he won’t be fathering anymore babies in this household.
This creative use of the Moms Fixed Free program makes the Community Spay/Neuter Clinic’s 32,000th surgery an especially exciting celebration!
